Several fatal cases of yellow fever diagnosed at the Institut Pasteur in Bangui
As part of the yellow fever surveillance program in the Central African Republic, the Institut Pasteur in Bangui was solicited by the Ministry of Health to investigate several deaths due to haemorrhaging. The patients’ serum was analysed at the haemorrhagic fever laboratory (WHO Collaborating Centre for haemorrhagic fevers), where they tested positive for yellow fever IgM.
|
The WHO Regional Centre for Arbovirus Research at the Institut Pasteur in Dakar confirmed these results. In all, 27 cases, including 9 deaths, were registered in 2009 with an epidemic peak in the month of November (13 confirmed cases and 4 deaths).
Entomological studies performed jointly between the Institut Pasteur in Bangui, the Ministry of Health and WHO as a result of these studies showed a strong presence of mosquito vectors from both the forest and urban cycles (Ae. africanus and Ae. aegypti). The viral genome is currently being sought in lots of mosquitoes of the sub-species Stegomya (Ae. aegypti) and vaccination campaigns have been organised in response.
Launch of a European project on tuberculosis in the Mediterranean region
