22/09/2010

The first case of H1N1 pandemic flu has been detected in Central African Republic (CAR) at the Institut Pasteur in Bangui (IPB). The WHO reference center for influenza at IPB is the only structure capable of performing this diagnosis in the country and it was confirmed by the "Platform Genotyping of Pathogens and Public Health (PF8-Genopole)" at the Institut Pasteur .
The sample was collected from a child who has never traveled, which proves that the virus is currently circulating in the country. As in Niger and Cameroon, the surveillance system in CAR has been made operational shortly before the announcement of pandemic influenza A/H1N1, through a project organized by the Institut Pasteur International Network and funded by the French Ministry of Health and "Department of Health and Human Services" in the U.S..

Central African Republic health authorities, have launched a vaccination campaign against influenza A/H1N1. On September 22, 2010, already 3 samples were positive for pandemic influenza A H1N1.
