Epidemics of dengue and yellow fever in Côte d'Ivoire

24/09/2010

Since May 2010, Côte d'Ivoire has a joint epidemic of yellow fever and dengue. Ivorian health officials are vaccinating people against yellow fever in Abidjan, after the disease killed two people and struck nine others in recent weeks. During the same period, dengue fever killed one person, and there have been 10 more confirmed cases, according to the Ministry of Public Health and Hygiene.

The Department of Health and Public Hygiene has established an epidemic evaluation committee involving the Institut Pasteur of Côte d'Ivoire. These cases of yellow fever and dengue have been confirmed by the Institut Pasteur of Côte d'Ivoire and the Institut Pasteur in Dakar. The Ivorian Government through the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene has undertaken several actions to curbed the epidemic. A vaccination campaign has been set up in Grand Bassam and Bouaké and in the city of Abidjan. In addition, a mosquito control plan (eliminating breeding sites) with the support of Cities was conducted. A large awareness campaign at epidemic locations is ongoing through posters and television spots.
