Hong Kong University - Pasteur Research Centre

The scientific partnership launched in 1997 between Institut Pasteur and the University of Hong Kong (HKU) was finalised on October 16, 1999 with the signature of an agreement establishing the HKU-Pasteur Research Centre (HKU-PRC) in the heart of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine campus.  HKU-PRC was officially inaugurated on October 24, 2000.

Research

HKU-PRC studies viral infectious diseases that pose a threat to public health and economic stability in Hong Kong, China and the larger Asian region.  Our research focuses on respiratory viral infections, with special emphasis on influenza and SARS, and on dengue fever, a mosquito borne disease.  The primary goal at HKU-PRC is to elucidate the fundamental biological processes of these viruses, for which our current arsenal of preventive and curative medicines is very limited.  We emphasise interdisciplinary approaches to confront the challenges posed by viruses and translate scientific discoveries into applications that will benefit society.

HKU

Teaching & training

HKU-PRC has established a Teaching and Training Centre of Excellence in Biomedical Research with the goal of becoming a reference for postgraduate training in Asia.  Several high profile courses (Cell Biology, Virology and Immunology) are offered on annual basis.  All have been validated by HKU as part of its Research Postgraduate Curriculum.
