PCR has been used to monitor bacterial meningitis in west Burkina Faso since the end of 2002, as a result of a joint programme of the Centre Muraz, the AMP and the Neisseria Unit at the Institut Pasteur. As was the case in Niger, the aim of the first component of the FSP has moved towards consolidating knowledge of techniques that are already being used. This has been achieved and the Centre Muraz has a thorough knowledge of the conventional diagnostic techniques as well as the latest developments, so that it is in a position to make an effective contribution to the microbiological monitoring of bacterial meningitis in west Burkina Faso.
Within the framework of the FSP, premises have been fitted out and equipment has been acquired.
