The Institut Pasteur in Côte d’Ivoire had also been using the PCR technique for many years, but not in the field of bacterial meningitis. Using PCR for this specific purpose has now been started and there are currently three biologists and three laboratory technicians trained in this specific use of the technique. PCR is now routinely used to monitor bacterial meningitis alongside conventional microbiological techniques.
