The three elements of the SISEA project

Element 1: Strengthening reference laboratories and establishing a network

  • Increasing the capacity of laboratories to identify and characterize pathogens, and in particular viruses
  • Standardization of laboratory techniques, and more specifically in the field of molecular biology
  • Implementation of a quality assurance mechanism for reference laboratories and front line laboratories (sentinel laboratories)
  • Creation of a circuit for samples moving between peripheral laboratories and reference laboratories, so as to ensure the transport of pathogens in optimal conditions of safety for health professionals and the environment

Element 2: Improving the epidemic alert mechanism for emerging viruses in each country

  • Strengthening national surveillance mechanisms by generating improvements in surveillance methods and procedures
  • Enhancing the role of the sentinel sites in the SISEA network
  • Participation in the investigation of epidemic episodes

Element 3: Strengthening the networks involved in epidemic response on a national and regional level

  • In each country, strengthening communication and coordination between the different sectors involved in surveillance and with international organizations and NGOs (WHO, IEO – International Epizootic Office, etc.)
  • Developing dialogue between countries, based on joint actions (e.g. training), presentation of the results obtained in scientific conferences
  • Strengthening the coordinating role of each partner institution’s actions at the regional level
  • Inclusion of the RIIP network in a vast regional network coordinated by WHO
  • Technical and scientific monitoring of SISEA activities and circulation of the results
